Hey, I've got similar problem. Compute waits for libvirt to attach disk and stops responding so it appears as "XXX" while listing services. Libvirt freezes with "Cannot acquire state change lock" status and never comes back. Usually after restarting libvirt compute goes back on-line.
How to fix this? There is no problem to attach disk via virsh, also nova manages to attach disk when creating VM.
