Hi Thiago,

Yours isn’t the same problem as mine; yours sounds like either the DHCP service
isn’t running, or your instances cannot reach the DHCP service somehow (i.e a
routing problem.) IMO, IRC answers are highly dependent on the knowledge of the
advice giver ;)

I had the same problem when I first installed Devstack, and I believe it was
because of an incorrect network setup. I redid the network setup, and
restarted, and my instances began getting IP addr’s via DHCP. Now my problem is
that the metadata service is not working, most likely because I am running
Quantum instead of nova-network, and it is set up for overlapping tenant
networks. I am going to try Mark’s suggested fix below (enabling the ‘q-meta’
service) and see if that solves the problem.

Best,

Will

Subject: Re: [Openstack] VMs not able to contact metadata service

Hi!

My Instance doesn't get an IP... Don't know if it is related to this problem...

I'm following this guide:
http://docs.openstack.org/folsom/basic-install/content/basic-install_operate.html

That guide uses Folsom / Quantum and, someone on IRC have said that my instance
isn't able to reach metadata but, I have no idea about what's going on...

Can someone enlighten me? I mean, if my problem is related to this or not?

Thanks!

Thiago

Will-

The metadata service in Folsom will only work when overlapping IP ranges are
disabled (see:
http://docs.openstack.org/trunk/openstack-network/admin/content/ch_limitations.html).
For Grizzly, we have added metadata service for overlapping networks. This
feature is currently available in devstack when you enable the q-meta service.
