Thank you, Andreas, for the detail explanation of the routes. After reading
your mail, I decided to take a fresh Ubuntu system to replace the current
neutron node and did a configuration to make sure each step is connected
correctly. After completed the internal/external/router settings, the router
gateway got pinged successfully from the host. The virtual router can now ping
to the external network gateway (172.29.105.254). The networking works again in
my virtual machines to ping each other and outside internet. I really
appreciate Andreas, James, Kevin and Remo's enthusiastic help during my
struggling finding the clue. I do learn more about the virtual networking route
during this week's investigation. Thank you all.
Best Regards,
Mitchell

Subject: RE: Can not ping the tenant router gateway from host
Hi Mitchel, sorry I might have overseen all the new data you sent out.
Having a look at your ping to the 105.254 address. As no router matches the
172.29.105.0/24 network, the packet goes out via the default route
(eth0) to some external router (172.29.106.254) and from there into the
105.254 address.
So when pinging the openstack router gateway, it's basically the same.
Your packet also goes out via the eth0 interface to your external router, which
then tries to deliver the packet. For some reason (don't know your network
setup) it can not deliver the packet to your openstack router. This is how I
think your network looks like with your current openstack config:
172.29.105.0/24
+ +
| |
| |
| |
| |
| | +-----------------------+
| | | |
| +-------+ eth2 |
+----------+--+ | | |
| ext router | |br-ex |
+-----+-------+ | | |
| 172.29.106.254 | qg-xx 172.29.105.101/24|
| | |
+-------------------------+ eth0 172.29.106.220/24 |
| |
+------------------------+
As explained before your external router has access to your 105.0/24 network.
And as you put br-ex on eth2 and configured your external network with subnet
105.0/24, I assume that your eth2 is directly connected to this subnet. Does
that make sense? If not, your openstack config might be wrong.
But coming back to what you want to achieve. Pinging the openstack gateway from
the host goes like this:
I have seen that your bridge br-ex does not have an IP address (however this is
not required for running openstack, but very helpful if you want to do some
debugging from the host). So what I would ask you to do is give your br-ex an
ip address in the 105.0/24 network e.g. ifconfig br-ex 172.29.105.200/24 Doing
so, a new route should appear in your host sending all packets to the
172.29.105.0/24 network into br-ex. This then acts like a switch and should
forward packets for the virtual router to your qg interface. Then also guests
in a private network that are connected to this router should be able to ping
your host via SNAT (but not the other way round).
And if your setup is like drawn above packets to the 105.254 address are also
delivered to via your eth2. So Ping to your external gateway
105.254 still should work. If it's not working, then your eth2 interface
probably is not connected to the 172.29.105.0/24 subnet.
Note: as your eth2 if is plugged into br-ex as port, you cannot assign
eth2 an ipaddress (in fact you can, but you would not gain connectivity).
Always assign IP addresses to the bridges where the port is plugged in!
Hope I I could help you a little bit forward!
