Hi, 

Intel wins on single thread performance and energy efficiency, AMD on cost 
efficiency - the latter may be eaten up by energy cost though.
Functional differences exist, if  you want to take advantage of the latest CPU 
extensions (AVX, AESNI, TSX,...)  otherwise not. 

ARM(v8) may be an interesting option in the future for scale - out workloads 
(moderate single thread performance requirement with high energy efficiency). 
Note that a lot of commercial software is not (yet?) avail for ARM - for open 
src you don't have that issue.
