sorry, no. I tried, but failed miserably to install a working build
environment using osc. I got all sorts of errors, binfmt_misc-related in
particular. I definitely need some sort of tutorial to get started.

There are 3 potential reasons for this breakage:
1) Broken partition table
2) Broken signature
3) Broken u-boot binary
Could you please try to redo each of these manually based on the script
at
https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file/openSUSE:13.1:Ports/JeOS/uboot-image-install.in
If that doesn't help, please try to replace bits and pieces with
known-good versions (12.3) and check which piece of the puzzle did fall
apart. Then we can concentrate on fixing that one.
