Linux 4.8 is the first upstream kernel with OOTB support for the RPi3. It is
due this weekend.

Kernel 4.9, which is the next LTS kernel, will likely be available mid
december.

Depending on your requirements, especially graphics, you will also have to
upgrade other parts from what is provided by 42.2.

As soon as at least Linux 4.8 is out, creating an image based on 42.2 plus the
new kernel is a viable option, but not any earlier. IMHO, we already have to
many images for all the ARM SoCs, breaking all the time because each one is a
little bit different. Catering for these differences should be properly done
upstream.

Kind regards,

Stefan
