And after I edit the partition table of the SD card by hand (either gdisk or parted) it renders the Pi unbootable - doesn't even load the firmware. I suspect this is related the hybrid nature of the partition table (MBR/GPT), and how the Pi loads it's firmware - but I'm afraid I'm beyond my area of expertise.
