Quick summary - 

with Leap15 from the image above, I have ethernet and wlan devices, but
I cannot activate them.  I tried creating a plain user, but YaST
crashed, also when attempting to set date&time.  

Then I switched to Tumbleweed:

With that, I have ethernet, but no wifi, not even a wlan device.  I see
my Logitech trackball recognised in dmesg output, but sddm-greeter is
spinning using up 250% CPU.
