Well, if you want to change the behaviour, goto Edit > Preferences >
Downloads and choose
( ) Ask every time where to save a file
( ) Save all files in this directory
[....................] [Browse]

PS: Maybe for a beginner it is not so bad that they end up on the
desktop - at least they can find it then. Otherwise if they are silently
saved somewhere else, it makes it much harder for a beginner to find them.
