When I updated from 9.3 to 10.1 using the iso image, I lost some packages
that were not included in the dvd, but were available from the ftp tree.
Some of them are easy enough to reinstall later, some, like hylafax, means
that the admin (me) needs to go through the configuration process again,
loosing some of the advantages of an update compared with a fresh install.
This does not happen with the paid box.
Thus my sugerence.
Would it be possible to have a secondary installation source during an
update? Ie, install everything from the primary source (the dvd), and try
to get the rest from the ftp.
There are some midground alternatives. For examle, the list of what could
be installed from the secondary source could already be in the dvd. The
update of the missing packages that need downloading could be postponed
till the system is up and running, by generating a list. Whatever.
Another alternative would be a straight forward method to produce our own
iso dvd with our list of packages included, or perhaps easier, adding a
second CD/DVD as add-on source, this CD being created by the user from a
list of needed packages not in the main dvd. The catch would be how to
generate that list.
Would any of this be feasible?
