You don't mention the size of the memory for the VM session. I have seen
SuSE try to use the swap partition, if there is not enough memory during
installation, and this can cause the symptoms seen in the first try.

As for the screen issues, I am not sure of the capibilties of the
"modern" VMWare video but if I remember correctly, to use the higher
resolutions etc. you had to have vmware tools installed.
