You can use the Crystal ones if you want. I agree though.. I am one of the majority that finds Gnome in general (along with its cartoon icons) to be an ugly and hopelessly useless window manager. I have to use it every day at work... and it's plain vanilla ugly... and awful.. the Gnome application inconsistencies annoy me the most...
