[opensuse-gnome] GeForce 8400 GS and Gnome 3

I have a GeForce 8400 GS that Gnome just doesn't like. When I try to 
enable desktop effects in 11.3 with the NVIDIA proprietary driver, the 
Simple Compiz manager tells me "Desktop effects are not supported on 
your current hardware / configuration. Would you like to activate them 
anyway?" I decline. Trying different Gnome 3 live CDs, including the 
12.1 m2, Gnome always reverts to fallback mode. The effects work in KDE 
with no complaints. Am I going to have to upgrade my hardware if I want 
to see Gnome 3?
