If it's KDE you may have a problem with effects.
If it was set as enabled previously, it still is.
Alt+SHIFT+F12 will toggle it off
Or boot to IceWM and edit it in the settings
Be careful too, there is a bug in the login with typing the password.
Try doing it very slowly and carefully. It's the 2nd digit that is the
problem.
