On the contrary. The current gnome has made me rush away into the arms of
xfce. I have been a gnome fan for 14 years - alas, no more.

Good move, yes... :-/

You may be gaining some new users, but you are loosing old users. The
same error the kde folks made and forced users to keep kde 3.
