You shouldn't have to reinstalled.  I've used "dup --from" to go
forwards,  GNOME3.x->forward, GNOME3.6->backwards, GNOME3.8->backwards,
etc... it has always worked for me.  You may have to run it twice;  i
just do that as a matter of course [I don't know why, but sometimes it
picks up some straglers].
