Michael,

i'm assuming you do not have compatible repositories enabled.
Do you have openSUSE:Factory in your zypper list?

GNOME:Factory is an 'addon' on top of openSUSE:Factory (not compatible
with openSUSE:12.3 repositories).

The library you're missing, libical1 does exist in Factory, so there
must be something weird there.

Note: for openSUSE:12.3, the latest released GNOME version is from the
3.8 series, which is stable (GNOME 3.9.x is the dev tree of GNOME 3.10;
to be shipped in openSUSE 13.1).

Hope that helps.
Dominique

If I try to install gnome-shell explicitly, I get this:

Problem: nothing provides libical.so.1()(64bit) needed by
gnome-shell-3.9.3-175.7.x86_64
 Solution 1: do not install gnome-shell-3.9.3-175.7.x86_64
 Solution 2: break gnome-shell-3.9.3-175.7.x86_64 by ignoring some of
its dependencies
