Hello Michael,
IMHO, if you think to drop alacarte then you should take care of
alternative way to set programs especially the ones you are not
installing with openSUSE packages, in order you can set them properly.
One of most annoying aspect in new Gnome concept (to my eyes) is the
apparent lack of configuration settings, as well as too many "hidden
functions" which need too much time to be discovered.
