We found it convenient to have a real fixed cycle.

Fedora/Ubuntu have 6 months and considered too short while 12 months too long.

You need to update the distribution regularly for new hardware support.

That was proposed as part of one strategy proposal.  There was some people 
that wanted to start a long term version but that was only in the planning 
phase.  There were enough interest to have it but not enough interest to do 
it.
