I did try booting with their in-house versioin 3.18.5 kernel instead.
That works. I can boot completely and access the system like with the
Opensuse old, original release kernel.  AFAICT they don't have a 3.19
kernel option to try.

Linode have now released a 3.19.1 kernel

If I use that instead of pvgrub to the Opensuse 3.19.x kernel the Guest boots normally

uname -r
 3.19.1-x86_64-linode53
