I just tested it and the icons opened the image, not the link
the solution at this problem proposed on mediawiki are all
ugly AFAIK (I would be glad to have a clue :-)

That's what templates are for, to hide complexity and ugliness.
If you look at this version

icons link and even have the correct mouseover.
