Do you mean *I* can enable it somewhere in the preferences, or do I have
to poke someone to enable the option so that it shows up in the
preferences (or wherever it should show up)?

yes, please. If merging is out of the question, then I think moving it
"out of the way" is the second best option. Are you going to do it, or
do you know who I should ask for it?
