It took a while, or should say it took a while until I noticed as I do
not use my laptop at home that often.

LightDM is unlikely to be involved, if the session manager
xfce4-session crashes you'll see "Disconnected from session
manager." in 1), X crashes should be logged to 2) and visible in
3), look also in 4) for crashes ("... segfault at ...").
