Please get informed about what patents, proprietary formats and the likes are 
before bashing.
WMV is a proprietary, non-disclosed format from Microsoft, which means that 
noone can make a codec
for it except Microsoft themselves.

The only way to read those on Linux is to install the "w32codecs-all" package 
from Packman.
Those are the MS Windows codecs and, hence, only work on 32bit Linux (using 
some trickery but that's
hidden from you by MPlayer and Xine).

"Out-of-the-box multimedia support" applies to MP3, MPEG*, etc... (and 
obviously Ogg and Theora) but
certainly not to Microsoft-only formats that, by definition, are not available 
to non-Microsoft systems.
