I un-installed gnome-screensaver and installed xscreensaver and it
worked just fine.  There are entries in gconf for DPMS for
gnome-screensaver but they didn't have any effect on my system.  When I
installed xscreensaver gnome seemed to automatically use it as the
screensaver which was nice.
