I used the standard 1.0.7 Ubuntu package and it worked fine. I have tried
the standard 1.0.6 openSUSE package and the upgraded 1.07 packages with the
same result. I also tried the 1.5beta2 package found here
http://ftp.softnet.tuc.gr/pub/linux/suse/projects/mozilla/experimental/10.0/
The error message is worded different, but is still the same. Not proper
access to the profile.

Permissions I think.

Which version of Firefox do you have on Ubuntu?
Could you please try a mozilla.org build of Firefox 1.0.7 on your 10.0?
If you are on it, it would also be interesting what you get with a 1.5b2
build from mozilla.org.
