should not harm. I got the same message (on ppc) but it works.

Is it really a ps2 mouse? If it is:
try a "cat /dev/psaux" or "cat /dev/input/mice" as root. It should 
produce some "noise" on your screen.

Take a look in /dev/input/
Theoretically you have to find the correct device, where your mouse 
events are reported. Insert this device in /etc/sysconfig/mouse or run 
sax2 with commandline option for the mouse device.
