either KDE or Gnome.

What is gained by only defaulting to Gnome?
*Answer:*
Nothing.
If the only difference after this announcement is that Gnome is the
default (as in, you have to actively choose to install KDE instead).
Then you still have to support your customers for both desktops. Since
some people just can't seem to default install anything.
That again leads to; no more people that can be laid of, which in turn
leads to no new growth. In other words there is no money saved.
So unless Novell just thought they would shake things up a bit, for fun,
- And wasn't thinking about money, KDE is indeed gone. Maybe not this
year or the next, but it'll all go in the end. My bet is 6 months from
now. Now, note that I understand Novells actions. They are trying to
make a better profit(as we all are). It's just that, I don't necessarily
agree that this is the best choice (I would keep the current model).
I for one will hang in there. Since there is no other contender.
Change is good, but in this case it just spells uncertainty. And that is
never good. I hope to see some good decisions in the near future that
can amend this.
