I didn't have to wait so long: memtest found an error in my 512 MB RAM
module.

I'm sorry for the alarm! I was hoping the solution of this problem was
so easy... :-)

The funny thing is that it looks like that just _one_ bit out of 512 MB is
broken. I wonder how much corrupted data I'll find on my hard disk in the
following days... :-|
