Wow, thank you! That was it.

In fact there is a broadcom network card on the motherboard (plus an extra 
davicom pci card). I disabled the onboard one in the bios, and booted - Yast 
took over for the second part of install - and it runs! Yippie!

So now I'm going to install the X-things, hope it works :-)
