You mentioned the root cause of most problems. NVidia removed support
for some older modells with newer driver versions. Our X developers
might tell you which one. 

I use myself mainly NVidia cards besides in routers and servers and
haven't had real problems yet. I could happen, that you have to
"re"-install the NVidia patch after a kernel update, but I haven't seen
this on my machines for quite a time.

I normally test every update of the NVidia-patch you get via YOU, on as
many of machines as possible in dual head and normal configs before we
release these updates.
