If it's a friend of mine, and I grew up calling him Benjamin, no I wouldn't. When I left school, I semi-changed my name (by dropping part of it) but people I knew back then still use the same name they did then. Not surprising, really. For a slightly more relevant example, I'm sure many many Germans still know DB as Deutsche Bahn, and always will, even though they themselves want it to be Die Bahn.
