I think it is more a case that some software is still compiled without big 
file support, so the files over 2GB either crap-out or they get truncated.

Firefox, for example, has problems with large ISO's, downloading the Debian 
DVD image with firefox made a 2GB file out of the original ~4GB ISO on the 
server. 

With the advent of fast internet connections and large multimedia files, it 
looks like some tools are still struggling to catch up. Hopefully big file 
support will be included soon...
