As I mentioned in my post of 04/28/2006, the two chipsets are:

The working machine:
nVidia Corporation NV34M [GeForce FX Go5200 32M/64M] (rev a1)

The problematic machine:
nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x] (rev a2)

On the working machine, the DISPLAYMANAGER_XGL_OPTS defaults were fine. On the
problematic machine, various options have been tried so far without success.

I will install on more machines now that 10.1 is done, and so I will have half
a dozen or more installations of xgl-enabled xorg to observe.
