In a nutshell: SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 has gone through additional hardening, has different documentation and package lists than SUSE Linux 10.1. An evaluation version is available but you have to pay for it. SUSE Linux 10.1 gets two years of security updates - and sometimes fix also other bugs. For SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop we offer seven years of maintenance (you need to pay a yearly fee for it) (maintenance includes security and generic fixes as well as hardware enablement) and will release several service packs. The target markets of the products are also different.
