Hey guys, don't know if you need a non-gui program or not, but have you 
looked at "kwatch" (gui) for doing the same thing?  It's very handy at 
alerting and can monitor several logs, which the user specifies.  There 
may also be some non-gui programs to do the same, just do a search in 
yast2.  Also, check on Packman's sites.
