I've had the same problem with an ASUS-Board with VIA P4M890/VIA
VT8237A-Chipset. Insert following at the boot-prompt:
insmod=ide-generic
After the installation is completed, you should update the kernel up to
2.6.18.x, which is supportng the newer chipsets.

Whit this boot option the SATA disk is still not recognized by Opensuse 10.1
On this hardware I can install Ubuntu 6.06.1 whitout any problem.
