I guess, as the fomenter of this thread--which has gotten even further
OT than I ever thought--I could contribute this:  I have a Lafayette
Radio Log-Log-Decitrig rule, model F341, made in Japan, in perfect
condition, which I used to use in the 1960's and early 70's, until
calculators became available.  I think it is made of bamboo, but it has 
a very nice plastic scale on both sides and the slide.  I admit that
I never understood all the possibilities of this fine instrument.
It works as well today as it did when it was made.  I don't!
