Usually, it should load automatically, but make sure that the USB 2.0
kernel module is loaded:

Apart from that, you could take a look at the information given by the
"usbview" applet. And you could maybe post the output of "cat
/proc/bus/usb/devices". Both while the disk is plugged in, of course.

PS. "USB 2.0" per se doesn't say anything about bandwidth, rather "USB
2.0 High speed" means theoretical 480 MBit/s while "Full speed" means 12
MBit/s and "Low speed" is 1.5 MBit/s. "Full" and "low" are already part
of USB 1.1. I have come across USB pen drives which claimed to be USB
2.0, but only supported "full speed"...
