I think your understanding of the benefits of having your module in the mainline kernel may be slightly delusional. Just because your module is in the kernel doesn't mean that everyone else or even anyone else is going to understand the code enough to be able make arbitrary changes that may be required. Abandoned kernel code gets removed eventually. If someone steps up to maintain it thats another story.
