Pat Shanahan said to try setting the time-out in the BIOS.  Thanx, Pat.
It worked.  I don't know why it was OK up to a few days ago, and then 
stopped, but I suppose there could have been a power glitch or something.
(No UPS on this machine--I'll have to rectify that.)
