With a name like "Torrent" I thought this was going to be fast, but I notice
I'm not the only one to find that it is relatively slow ("dribble" springs to
mind :). Another new user mentioned that it took 12 hours to download 1/2GB,
I'm finding it faster than that, more like 1/2GB/hour, but that's still way
slower than FTP to most of the good mirrors (I get between 2 and 8MBits on my
cable connection depending on other users).
Is it meant to be that slow, or am I doing it wrong? Is this "punishment" for
being a new user (in 9.3 the torrent stuff didn't seem to be integrated with
the browser, and I never managed to get it to work)? Will I find that as I use
it more and offer more "stuff" for upload it gets faster?
I can see that the whole peer-to-peer thing reduces load on those poor
overworked mirrors, and that's a good thing, and if slow becomes socially
necessary, I'm all for it. Similarly, if I can "earn" more download speed by
helping others, then that's clearly enlightened self-interest at work, and I'm
all for that too!
Comments?
Cheers,
Simon
