  It seems it's solved. I'd forgotten that I'd made my own rpm of gnupg and 
installed it, but somehow that made 'gpg' *un-install*, which apparently made 
it so that checksum sig's couldn't be checked and the system wasn't 
'trusting' anything to be downloaded (which I guess is a Good Thing, heh).
  I uninstalled the 'gnupg' and re-installed gpg (what the difference is I 
haven't a clue) and all is fine now.
