As a possible workaround/solution: try lilo instead of grub. No need to 
re-install the system for that. Just boot into the installed system via the 
install CD (not from the initial boot menu but after you selected "install 
system" when you come to the part where you can choose "fresh 
install", "update" or "other" - go for "other" ad you should find it - that's 
out of my head, hope i got it right).
