I don't think so. It is run when the filesystem is created by mkfs, but 
not by fsck, afaik.

Yes, but not "-a", that doesn't really "test". Run "smartctl --test=short 
/dev/hda", and see the result after the specified time with "smartctl 
- --log=selftest /dev/hda". If it passes, use "--test=long", and wait. You 
can keep using the system while it runs, but it may take an hour or two.

In the case of seagate, those two tests are basically the same as their 
verification disquete does.
