However, it seems that the freedb database has been taken over by
someone else, (go to the web site to find out) and the database is
broken at this time. Supposedly they are improving it, but it has
been broken a long time.
Use freedb2.org (TrackType.org) instead. The server name is:
freedb.freedb2.org
and the path is
/~cddb/cddb.cgi
For the record: I didn't have to change anything in easytag, or in any
other software that uses freedb. freedb.freedb.org provides access via
cdddp://freedb.freedb.org:8880/ as well as via
http://freedb.freedb.org/~cddb/cddb.cgi. And one of these two access
methods were preconfigured in all my applications; I don't change them
usually. I haven't had any problems with the database either. (Well,
besides the data quality, but that's a problem as long as cddb exists.
All uncategorized CDs are blues...)
I have to say that I'm reluctant to use tracktype.org. He doesn't want
to release the code for his stuff, and he wants to make new data
submissions public domain. I much prefer the GPL approach of freedb, as
public domain submissions can be ripped off even easier, c.f. the cddb
debacle a few years ago.
FWIW, five minutes ago, I saw an easytag update message on the
packman list that mentions gnudb.org -- yet another freedb successor
candidate. On their Web site there's no information on licensing,
plans, or other related information, though.
