I cannot vouchsafe the x86_64 kernel, but on my 32 bit 10.0 I'm using 00:10.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): NEC Corporation uPD72874 IEEE1394 OHCI 1.1 3-port PHY-Link Ctrlr (rev 01) (result taken from lspci,) this setup automatically, I did not have to do anything past installing the hardware.
