First of all many thanks to all of you who took the time to
answer this question.

Not sure but the manual calls it a MS 6702E and it is the Athlon
939 pin socket.

Yes, maybe 2 years old. There are SATA1 & 2 sockets on the MB.
I even got the cables when I purchased the board. I was upgrading
and just reused my old ide disks.

My main concern was if it would work in conjunction with/in addition
to the ide controller. Still a little concerned because the mb manual
discusses using the SATA drives as serial devices using the southbridge
VT8237 and or as a raid setup using the Promise 20579 chipset. A little
confusing to me as I really don't know hardware all that well.

OK, the bios shows an option to turn on the SATA controller but nothing
else.

Guess I should just buy a drive and try it following your advice.
