It works now.
Needed incantations:
Uninstall many packages installed recently, reinstall some, downgrade
others. Dance around Tux. Whatever. Remove tmp directory contents.
Start gnome as root; if it works, try as user. Reinstall everything.
Keep fingers crossed.
