It's normal operation--when the processors don't have much to do, they run at 
lower frequency to conserve power.  If there's a resource intensive task, 
they will go to full frequency.

Something is fishy, Linux doesn't just freeze for no reason.  Do you see 
anything strange in /var/log/messages prior to freeze?
